Peninsula’s Fifth Annual Plein Air Competition – Along the Crooked River: 100 years later
Celebrating the importance of the Cuyahoga River and the beauty of the Cuyahoga Valley, the Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, is sponsoring its Fifth Annual Plein Air Competition. In 1913, a massive flood engulfed the Valley and destroyed the Ohio and Erie Canal. This year’s event, which will commemorate the flood of 1913, will take place in and around the Village of Peninsula and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Peninsula’s Fifth Annual Plein Air Competition will be held June 7, 8 and 9, 2013. Please join us in this artistic event and help celebrate the wonder and beauty of the Cuyahoga Valley. An exhibit of the works created during the competition will be on display and available for sale at Peninsula Art Academy (PAA), June 29 thru August 10, 2013. Awards will be presented at the artists’ reception on Saturday, June 29, from 5 to 7 pm at PAA.
Judging and Prizes: Awards will include: Best of show: $350, Second place: $200, Third place: $100, People’s Choice and Honorable Mentions.
Eligibility: The Competition is open to artists, 18 years of age and over. Employees of the National Park and members of the Peninsula Chamber may enter but are ineligible for awards.
Format: Original two-dimensional art in any medium other than photography may be created during this event. No three-dimensional or computer generated work will qualify. Canvas/paper plus frame shall be less than or equal to 40” in any one direction.
Display Venue: Works created during the competition will be displayed at Peninsula Art Academy Gallery as space allows June 29 thru August 10, 2013. All artwork will be for sale with 60% to the artist and 40% to the Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC). Winning artwork will be featured on www.explorepeninsula.com link to plein air page
Criteria: Artists may produce as many works as they wish during the competition but are limited to 2 pieces for submission for judging. Artwork must be created on site in the true plein air style and may not be worked on off site or generated from reference photos. Styles may range from realism to abstract, and must be in keeping with the impromptu style of plein air.
All sales of artwork during the competition (June 7-9) must be made through the Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC).

A $35 registration fee will assist in covering the cost of the juror, prizes and logistics. Checks, payable to PACC, are preferred.
Include your Artist statement/bio with the entry form.
Procedure: Artists must check in at Elements Gallery and have their blank surfaces stamped, 1619 West Mill Street, (next to the depot station). Phone 330-657-2788. Artists are encouraged to bring as many canvases/papers as they wish to create during the competition. You may come to Elements Gallery Thursday night for stamping and info so you may get an early start on Friday morning.
All canvases/papers must be stamped to be accepted for judging.

Friday, June 7:
Registration and stamping 8-5, Elements Gallery. Paint out in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Designated sites only. (please refer to Map #1)
6-9pm Voices in the Valley:, Live music at the historic GAR Hall. Food and beverages available for purchase.
Saturday, June 8:
Registration and stamping: 8-5, Elements Gallery. Paint out, Peninsula area sites. Some sites require prior permission. (Please refer to Map #2)

Delivery of completed artwork: 3-5pm. Artists may deliver up to 2 completed works to be entered for judging, exhibit, and sale. Work to be delivered to the Peninsula Art Academy, 1600 W. Mill Street. NO SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 5PM.
Finished works must be framed, with picture hanging wire attached. For your convenience, reasonably priced framing options will be available at PAA through Fine Art Services when entries are dropped off.
Pick Up of Art: Pick up of artwork from the PAA will be Saturday, August 10, from 5 to 7pm, or Sunday, August 11, 2013 from 11 am – 5 pm. Other arrangements may be made 330 657-2788.
