The award winners are:
Best of Show: Lawrence Churski, “King of the Road”
The tradition of Plein Air painting became popular in the impressionist era in Europe. Premixed pigments in tubes became available to painters enabling them to carry their studio outside to paint in an unstudied approach. With changing outdoor conditions the work was influenced by light, atmosphere and weather conditions. Often the work was completed in the studio keeping the freshness of the work intact. Many times the outdoor work was used as a study for future paintings.
The plein air painters of the 2014 event worked in selected sites in the Peninsula and Cuyahoga Valley National Park areas. Composition, confidence and color were the standards I used to jury the work. Much of the work was done, from my point of view, on a professional level. And many of the paintings were from competent to new artists in the genre of landscape painting.
As always it is a difficult decision to select award winners. This year, choosing honorable mentions was especially difficult.
I want to strongly encourage those that are not in the exhibit to keep working. Competent painting and drawing take practice. See as many exhibits as possible. They are a mini course in making art. Hopefully, those of you not in the exhibit this year will keep painting and enter again next year.
